Family and Children Court in Coimbra

Remodeling of Family and Children Court in Coimbra
IGFEJ – Instituto de Gestão Financeira e Equipamentos de Justiça

This project concerns the intervention in the building of the Court of Family and Children of Coimbra, located at 519 Fernão de Magalhães street, in Coimbra.
The building was built in the 90s to install the services of the Court of Family and Minors and the services of registries and notary.
The lower two floors, 0 and 1, were for Registries and Notaries and the 2nd floor for the Court.
Taking into account the functional changes dictated by the new “Judicial Map”, combined with the need for rehabilitation of the building, we were entrusted by the IGFEJ to develop the general project for the reinstallation of the Court on two floors.
The building has a rectangular implantation area with its greater direction between av. Fernão de Magalhães and Padre Estevão Cabral street. Laterally, to the north and south, it is bordered by current construction buildings.
It consists of two separate bodies: the main body, with a main façade facing av. Fernão de Magalhães, with 3 floors above ground – ground floor, 1st and 2nd floor and a basement. The other body is an extension of the basement of the main body to the rear having therefore only one floor. The basement cover in this body was previously used as the main access to the first floor, where the Civil Registry functioned, being leveled with Padre Estevão Cabral street.
The basement is occupied only with car parking.
The structure of the building consists of fungiform slabs lightened with reusable plastic molds, directly resting on reinforced concrete pillars. The main stairs of the building are in metallic structure.
The intervention focuses on the functional remodeling and the “habitability” and environmental conditions that are fundamental to the overall good functioning of the Court, also nullifying the degradation situations in the intervention area. The project solution was developed taking into account the maximum amount stipulated for the intervention, so it was necessary to choose solutions that, without losing sight of the correct functioning of the Court, were more economical.
