Instituto Nacional de Saúde Dr. Ricardo Jorge – Laboratory of the Human Molecular Genetics Department

In the Institute’s initial design, the possibility of creating a second laboratory building, similar to the first one, was contemplated.

Nevertheless, the dimension of such materialization would vastly surpass the Department’s most ambitious goals, so the new building will be incorporated in the element that establishes the connection between the two large laboratory shapes.

The adopted solution stems from the same principles that guide the design of the Institute’s laboratories, that are adjusted to the desired characteristics and size, for instance, as regards to the laboratory benches’ arrangement, to which a route of pipes and pipelines is connected with their main pathways developing horizontally at the sealing of the central venting, and vertically through ducts located along the passageways.

On the ground floor is where the administrative offices, the library and the laboratory material washing service are located.

As a whole, the building includes several laboratories, such as Biochemistry Analysis, Toxicology, Genetics, Cytogenetic, Human Genetics, DNA, Oncobiology, Molecular Biology and PCR – Polymerase Chain Reaction, distributed over a floor area of about 710m².

One floor below, produced by a partial basement, with a floor area of 143², shelters storage facilities and archives.

A technical upper floor is the base of the technical facilities.
