Nuclear Technological Institute – Kinetic Tube
Superior Technical Institute of the Univerity of Lisbon
This is the building of the Superior Technical Institute built at the Technological Nuclear Campus in Sacavém. This building is intended for the laboratory to house the installation of the Kinetic Tube.
Taking into account the size of the building and the type of installation, it was considered that its deployment on campus should be, on the one hand, in a place that would allow the necessary accessibility to the installation and on the other, it would not be possible to foresee solutions envisaged for facilities in the enclosure through new buildings.
Thus, the location chosen for the building was the southwestern area of the northwestern enclosure of the isotope building. It has a rectangular shape, about 26 m by 12 m, 6 m high, and only accessible on one of the smaller façades and all other façades should not have openings.
Thus, the location chosen, which borders an existing street, is a “slope” that allows access to the façade facing the street and have the building semi buried, reducing its impact.
The building as referred is constituted by a large main volume with a height of about 6 m and has attached a lower one than intended for storage. The proposed solution for the façade is to “grab” the two volumes with a blade at the height of the lowest so as to “cut” the great height of the main volume.
The coating materials will be the painted thermal plaster and the simple plaster painted in the area of the warehouse and the apparent concrete of the blade and side shortenings thereof.
Functionally the building is destined to the laboratory that will house the Kinetic Tube, so it will be constituted by a main space with the total length of the building where, on anti-vibratile mass, the experimental tube will be installed. Laterally the various rooms will support the experimental room. In the smallest volume will be the gas storage and the compressor room.
