Superior Technical Institute of the University of Lisbon
The Master Plan for the IST facilities’ Improvement and Expansion, estimated the construction of several new buildings, being of special relevance the Civil Engineering Pavilion, the “North Block”, located between the Electricity and the Mechanics Pavilions, the “South Block”, located between the Chemistry and Mines Pavilions, the “Science Building” and the “Post Graduation Building”.
Alongside these larger impact ones, there was also a plan for extensions of the Masters Building (former factories) and the pool area. This last one is designated as Social Work Pavilion, since it hosts, besides the facilities related to the pool, the IST’s social work facilities.
With this Project, a new building element was created, were the new required facilities are incorporated, covering: various Social Services, sports and supporting facilities and the pool’s technical facilities
Aesthetically, a line guiding towards the symmetric design was chosen, in the North side (completed in 1992), to which corresponds the creation of the main element, following the architectural formulation of the former facilities, connected to the present pool element by another with a current look, entirely glazed, that incorporates the top floor which, with this connecting element, is behind the Rovisco Pais Avenue’s plan.
In this new building, that is an extension of the former one, the project allows for two floors above the ground and one as a semi basement, finalised by a partial occupying the coverage central area, allowed as long as they do not exceed the present building height.
Outside, in the parts that are a replica of what already exists, the same complements were strictly applied. In the central area, the large glazed panel is supported by an aluminium structure.
