The design of the new buildings – Buildings A and B – is integrated within the intervention area of the municipal development known as “Rehabilitation of Vila Dias”.
Vila Dias is a workers’ village in Lisbon, from the second half of the 19th century, located in the parish of Beato. It was built in 1888 to house the factory workers of Xabregas. The buildings were recently acquired by the Lisbon City Council and became part of the municipal heritage to be rehabilitated/requalified under the “Courtyards and Villages” program.
The project for the built environment, in terms of the road network, involves the requalification of Beco dos Toucinheiros, with the necessary changes to improve accessibility compared to the existing conditions.
The section between Rua de Xabregas and Vila Dias, next to the railway line, is maintained as a secondary access for pedestrians and, occasionally, small emergency vehicles, given the limitations in width and height due to the underpass below the railway retaining wall buttresses.
This road is maintained up to elevation +20/21, along the side of the new building, but connecting to Vila Dias itself, where a free space for leisure and social interaction – designated as a “plaza” – will be created.
In this area, a playground, previously located at the eastern end of the existing complex, will be relocated. Also, at the eastern end of Vila Dias, a sports field will be rehabilitated and maintained.
The development consists of two buildings (A and B).
Building A, located northwest of the existing complex, is composed of two blocks set at a slight angle. Both blocks have 4 floors, with the lower floor forming a common base. This building includes a total of 72 housing units: 46 of typology T1 and 26 of typology T3.
Building B, composed of 4 sections, follows a formal rehabilitation approach based on the reinstatement of the main compositional elements of the original buildings. The buildings thus preserve their volumetry and their original architectural image. Building B contains a total of 70 housing units: 60 of typology T1 and 10 of typology T2.
